What we do

Fellfoot Forward Village atlas

Village Atlas

The historic village atlas approach will enhance the Victoria Counties History (VCH) project which is already underway with local historians undertaking historical research nationwide. We’ll be engaging with local communities to help develop the skills and confidence to develop their own projects in future. If you live in the local area, you’ll be able to join us on any of these events and help us to uncover the past.

How to tell the story of a village

Our partner, DigVentures, is holding a short course in which you will learn new skills whilst also helping to document and celebrate the stories of the villages of Croglin, Cumwhitton, and Hayton, in the Fellfoot Forward LPS area.

You’ll learn how to research the story of a village, and its surrounding parish. Then put the techniques you learn into practice to carry out your own investigation of one of our three villages. At the end, you’ll pool your research with your fellow classmates and volunteers to create a Village Atlas, and share the story of your chosen village in an end of course group presentation to celebrate your discoveries.

This eight week course will be delivered using a flexible combination of online lessons and in-person seminars, which are held alternately every Wednesday at 2-3.30pm. Please note: This course includes online lessons, plus seminars that can be attended in person or online according to preference. If you don’t have a reliable internet connection, we can help you access the online classes through our buddy system.
