Making the most of our woodland for wildlife and woodfuel
Woodland in the Allen Valleys
The Allen Valleys contains 30% of the area of woodland of ancient origin in the North Pennines AONB, 20% of the AONB’s Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland area and 53% of the AONB’S of plantations on ancient woodland sites (PAWS).
Allen Valleys woodlands are important for their contribution to the landscape and for the biodiversity which they support. This includes red squirrels and a very northerly and isolated population of dormice at Allen Banks.
Through our Allen Valleys Landscape Partnership Scheme (LPS) we can help land owners to ensure woodlands in the Allen Valleys are being managed to maximise their benefits to the landscape, biodiversity and a sustainable local economy.
Help for woodland owners
We are identifying woodland owners who require help managing their woodlands. We can provide a subsidised service to those woodland owners who require Forestry Commission approved woodland management plans for their holdings. We also hope to support the development of an accredited local wood fuel supply.
Management plans are needed for the following reasons:
- They help identify opportunities to increase biodiversity and safeguard wildlife and habitats in woodland.
- They help identify the economic potential of your woodland.
- A Forestry Commission approved management plan is now a requirement before receiving any Forestry Commission (Countryside Stewardship) grant funding for woodland management works.
We are supporting woodland management planning on the following first come first served basis:
For woodland below 3ha (where you cannot claim a Forestry Commission grant) the Allen Valleys Landscape Partnership Scheme will charge you a flat rate of £200 for a FC approved Plan. Actual cost is likely to be between £600 and £1200
For small woodlands above 3ha (where the landowner can claim a £1,000 grant from the Forestry Commission) the Allen Valleys Landscape Partnership Scheme will charge £200 and claim the £1,000 Forestry Commission grant from the landowner.
