The first of our 25th anniversary celebration events
As part of the celebrations to mark the North Pennines 25th year as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) people are being offered the chance to learn one of the area’s most traditional crafts – dry stone walling.
The intricate heritage craft will be taught by one of the industry’s finest, Peter Moorhead of the Dry Stone Walling Association.
There will be three chances throughout the year to get a taste of what it is like to build these iconic walls and the first is being held at Bowlees Farm in Upper Teesdale next week (Saturday, April 13).
Prospective wallers will need to be physically fit and be prepared for a rigorous day of lifting stone and digging.
The North Pennines AONB Partnership plays a part in training dry stone wallers of the future thanks to a four-year Heritage Landscape Skills project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The project funds the ‘intake’ of two apprentices each year to undertake a six-month training course, which leads to Lantra and Dry Stone Walling Association (DSWA) accredited tests.
Get your hands dirty
Lesley Silvera, the AONB Partnership’s Project Development Officer who manages the Heritage Landscape Skills project, said of the special day-long course “This is a great opportunity to get your hands dirty and become acquainted with this traditional skill.
“Dry stone walls have become an integral aspect of the North Pennines landscape, providing shelter for stock as well as creating structure in the uplands. Peter is one of the best in the business so although it’s only a day, I’m sure everyone who attends the course will take something valuable away from it.”
First of 25 events
This is the first of 25 events to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the North Pennines becoming an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the first of 10 events to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the AONB becoming a European Geopark.
Course attendees will meet at Bowlees Visitor Centre in Upper Teesdale at 10am on Saturday, April 13. The event will finish at 4pm.
