Superb Route

The Wheels to the Wild Cycle Route is almost 70 miles long and will introduce you to much of what the North Pennines AONB and European Geopark has to offer. This superb route has been designed as a voyage of discovery taking in the fascinating landscapes and geology of the area. The main route follows surfaced roads, most of which are quiet lanes. There are also opportunities for off-road road alternatives to the main route in some places.

Waterproof Guide

The route is supported by a fully waterproof guidebook with clear directions and interpretation. The guide also includes a 'Where to Stay' section and lists cycle services serving the route. It also includes three day-ride routes suitable for mountain and hybrid cycles.

A leisurely two to three days is ideal to cycle the main route, allowing you to appreciate the unique North Pennines landscape and enjoy some of its special attractions along the way. By doing the three day routes you could enjoy a full week of cycling!

The Route

Starting in Wolsingham the route passes through Frosterley, Stanhope, Rookhope, Allenheads, Nenthead, Alston, Garrigill, Middleton-in-Teesdale and returns to Wolsingham via Hamsterley Forest. The main route also includes three day rides - Waskerley Round, Swinhope High Challenge and the Killhope Round.
