What's it all about?

Rock Detectives are clubs for children aged 6 to 12 (under 8's must be accompanied by an adult). There are three clubs across the North Pennines where you can get involved in activities from fossil hunts, games and crafts, to video animation and visits to 'hands-on' attractions - all with a rocky theme!

Membership costs £1 then all the events are free! Members receive a Rock Detectives T-shirt and bag to start their Rock Detectives kit. Look inside for more information about Rock Detectives - there's more to rocks than you ever could have imagined!

You'll find Rock Detectives Clubs at:

  • Harehope Quarry in Weardale, run by the Harehope Quarry Project
  • Allendale in Northumberland, run by North Pennines Heritage Trust
  • Talkin Tarn Country Park near Carlisle, run by Carlisle City Council

More about Rock Detectives ...

Rock Detectives is an initiative of the AONB Partnership, and is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Natural England and the Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain. Taking a lead from the North Pennines, two of our partner Geoparks, Beigua, in northern Italy and Arouca in Portugal, have set up their own Rock Detectives clubs using our model and logos etc.
