A Special Place

The North Pennines is one of England's most special places - a peaceful, unspoilt landscape with a rich history and vibrant natural beauty. It was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1988. It is also a European and Global Geopark. Much of the North Pennines is also designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Please consider your impact on the sometimes fragile environment of the North Pennines, follow the Countryside Code and Be a 'Green Visitor' when you can!

Green Tourism Businesses

There are a number of tourism businesses in the North Pennines which have awards under the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) or the Bellamy Award Scheme - when you visit them you can be sure that the environmental impact of your stay is being considered and reduced wherever possible.
