Highlights Contemporary Craft Tour 3rd to 11th November 2018
Craft+Conflict = touring exhibition
This year’s Highlights Contemporary Craft Tour is entitled Craft+Conflict and it takes the theme of conflict, not only marking the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1 but also exploring ideas of rural conflicts, refugees from war and even family conflicts.
Bringing together artists from Syria, Sweden, Sri Lanka and the UK (including three from Highlights’ home county of Cumbria), Craft+Conflict includes an exciting variety of media including ceramics, enamel, film and video, resin and textiles. In parallel, in association with Aileen Brindle of f.o.a.k (few of a kind collections), work designed and made by refugees supported by the UNHCR’s MADE51 programme will also be exhibited and on sale.
Craft+Conflict has been touring venues in Cumbria, Co. Durham and Northumberland since the beginning of September. The exhibition will be seen for the first time in Upper Teesdale at Bowlees Visitor Centre, Newbiggin in Teesdale for two weekends, 3/4 and 10/11 November. The exhibition and outreach programme at Bowlees is supported by Northern Heartlands, one of sixteen Great Place Schemes in the UK funded by Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England. Included in the project have been workshops with Middleton-in-Teesdale and Forest of Teesdale Primary Schools working with artist Mark Gibbs; and a Masterclass with artist Sumi Perera with the Teesdale Artist Network.
