A stretch of Alfred Wainwright’s famous Coast-to-Coast walking trail will be officially reopened on Saturday following a successful Crowdfunding campaign that raised over £30,000.
The campaign, which was backed by TV presenter Julie Bradbury and author Amanda Owens, aka The Yorkshire Shepherdess, came about after staff from the North Pennines AONB Partnership heard about people getting stuck in the boggy ground that surrounds Nine Standards Rigg, on the border of Cumbria and Yorkshire.
The route attracts thousands of visitors every year and that, coupled with wet summers, had left the ground unsafe for walkers with many needing specialist help from local mountain rescue teams to free them.
Along with the new 392-metre stretch of flagstones, there is also a new finger post at the site where walkers are being encouraged to take a snapshot of themselves enjoying the new route and share on social media using the hashtag #ninestandardsrigg.
