A film preview of Beekeeping in the North Pennines – An Oral History
AN oral history project has unearthed a hive of information about one of Britain’s most-beloved pastimes – Beekeeping.
As part of its Nectarworks project, the North Pennines AONB Partnership wanted to collect stories from veteran apiarists in a bid to keep the intricacies of this intriguing interest alive.
The initial plan was to carry out the interviews and store them for posterity but the stories were so fascinating the end results have been made into a film that will be premiered at a special celebratory event later this month.
Thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Nectarworks’ aim is to enthuse, educate and enable communities to take action for bees and other pollinators by restoring and increasing flower-rich habitats across the AONB.
In total, 24 beekeepers from tin and around the North Pennines were interviewed and the stories, which ranged from the poignant to the hilarious, will be premiered at an event in St John’s Chapel later this month.
‘Too good not to share’
Working alongside volunteers to gather the tales Mandy Oliver, Community Officer at the AONB Partnership, said: “We met some wonderful people and heard some amazing stories. At the end of the process we looked at what we had and decided it was too good not to share.
“Such as the story about Allan Hodgson, from Esh Winning, who wore a beard made entirely from bees to prove they weren’t dangerous to the Gateshead Garden Festival Committee and who also loaned his bees to a famous American artist who then put them into a skeleton for his slightly macabre art installation. It’s been an absolute privilege to hear these stories and it’s a pleasure to be able to share them.”
